The Motability Car and Scooter Scheme was established in 1978, and since then it has helped millions of disabled people to acquire mobility vehicles, which help them to go about their daily life with greater ease. In this post, we are going to take a look at the benefits of this scheme in further detail.
Of course, you can always purchase a new or used mobility car outright without using the scheme, and a lot of people do so. But, there are many advantages associated with using the Motability Scheme. First, though, let’s determine if you are eligible. You must get one of these: War Pensioners Mobility Payment (WPMS), Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP), or finally, the Higher Rate Motability Component of Disability Living Allowance (HMRC DLA). If you receive any of the above, under the Motability Scheme you will be able to get one of the following: a powered wheelchair that is custom-built for your needs on a five-year lease, a new powered wheelchair or scooter on a three-year lease, a nearly-new wheelchair accessible vehicle on a three-year lease (i.e. a vehicle that is less than two and a half years old), a wheelchair accessible vehicle on a five-year lease, or a new car on a three-year lease. This leads us onto one of the many benefits of this scheme: you will be able to choose a new wheelchair accessible vehicle every three years. Sounds good, right?
Other benefits include the fact that you are able to add adaptions to mobility vehicles at no added cost. It’s all about ensuring the vehicle is as comfortable and easy as possible for you. You can also add two named drivers to your car. Of course, you do not need to be one of these drivers; you can nominate two people on your behalf, whether this is a carer, a friend, or a family member. Another advantage associated with acquiring wheelchair accessible vehicles via this scheme is the fact that you have a 60,000-mileage allowance. This is a fairly substantial limit and should be more than enough. Please note, however, that you will be charged 5p for every mile over 60,000. All wheelchair friendly cars acquired through this scheme come with insurance protection. Such protection includes the replacement of any tools or accessories supplied with the vehicle, travel to and from your workplace, glass replacement or repair, theft or fire damage, accidental damage, and loss of our damage to your vehicle. Finally, you will have a huge range of new motability cars to choose from, and the decision on what car to go for is completely up to you.
As you can see, the benefits of acquiring mobility vehicles through the Motability Scheme are extensive. Not only will you be able to drive away with a new vehicle every three years, but you will also benefit from comprehensive insurance protection.
